Again, there were several contenders for this, but I decided to go for another show I hadn't used yet, not only because I hadn't used it, but because it was an extremely fine pilot episode that introduced a great series.

It's Lewis.

Starring Kevin Whately and Laurence Fox (who plays DS James Hathaway) Lewis is a detective series that is a spin-off from Morse. Lewis was Morse's Sergeant and has now been promoted to the rank of Inspector. Lewis and Hathaway in their own way are both mavericks and maybe surprisingly their partnership works extremely well.

It's set in Oxford and several of the mysteries do centre around the University and it's another show that is family orientated, not so far paced you get tired watching it, but nor does it limp along, it's fairly gentle and very believable. There are two other recurring characters, their boss Chief Superintendent Jean Innocent, who often despairs of them and was keen to pension Lewis off to start with, but soon discovers what a great team they are and Dr Laura Hobson (who also appeared in Morse.

There are personal issues for both men, Lewis is over-coming not only the death of Morse, but also of his wife. However, these issues blend in very well with the case and unlike certain shows do not overtake the episodes to the detriment of the case, but are part of them.

It's another series I strongly recommend if you enjoy the not-overly gritty detective series that isn't full of bad language and sex, nor does it talk down to the viewer. I wonder how soon it'll be before ITV decide to cancel it!
