We were on course for one of the biggest upsets in the history of the tournament as Federer was one game away from crashing out. It didn't surprise me in the slightest that poor Falla faltered at that stage. Federer was one super-lucky man; he didn't win the match, Falla lost it through nerves and injury.
I'm not the biggest Federer fan (unlike
I didn't watch the entire match, but I was listening to McEnroe's commentary for a lot of it, and he said the same: Fed isn't playing badly, Falla is outplaying him and what I did watch (the final set aside) confirmed that.
Fed gave us a five-setter and not to be outdone Novak Djokovic did too - playing until nearly 11:00 p.m. under the roof and floodlights. I find it somewhat 'amusing' that having spent how ever many millions or million of millions on the roof, it's only been used twice and then not through rain *g* And let's not forget Nikolay Davydenko, who also took five sets to come through.
On the other hand Andy Roddick (my second favourite male player) seemed as if he had plans for the evening, as he raced through his match at top speed, two sets completed in just under an hour!
I was surprised that Elena Baltacha crashed out, she had the match one - and she shouldn't have choked when serving for it. I was pleased to see young Laura Robson wasn't over-awed by being on Centre Court and playing Jelena Jankovic, she played a good match - as
All in all it was an amazing first day of the Championships. I was sorry to see my three favourite female players: Kim Clijsters, Justine Henin and Jelena Jankovic are all in the same half of the draw. *Sighs*
And today brings us Rafa and Murray - I was very surprised to see that Murray is out on Court One and playing second, not on Centre Court after Rafa - Wimbledon put Soderling rather than Murray on Centre??? How odd.
Not only does today bring Rafa, but today brings the Budget and it will almost certainly clash with Rafa's match, which is very disappointing.
Ah, well, I just hope I don't go through what
