Silver paced around his home, tossing a small silver ball from one hand to the other. Normally touching his trinkets, holding them, caressing them, calmed him, but not today. Because it wasn't his trinkets he wanted to touch, to hold and to caress; it was Steel.
Steel: the man who was the object of his dreams, his fantasies; pretty much his every waking thought. Steel: the man who was so like his name, more so than the other elements were. Steel: the man who seemed oblivious to Silver's overt and covert flirtations. Steel: the man whom Silver had still not managed to melt.
Could you melt steel? Silver paused his pacing and pondered the question. However, it didn't take long to realise he hadn't got an answer. No doubt Steel himself would know, but it wasn't a question Silver could foresee asking the steel-like man.
He sighed and sank down onto the sofa. Even if steel could be melted, be was beginning to think that Steel couldn't be. Maybe Silver was wrong to keep trying; maybe he'd been wrong to listen to Sapphire when she'd told him Steel didn't dislike Silver - for Steel that was tantamount to deep affection. Maybe Sapphire had been wrong; maybe Steel just had no feelings for Silver at all. Maybe he would never be, could never be, melted. Maybe it was time Silver stopped trying; moved onto someone else.
But he wouldn't. He couldn't. Because the more time he spent trying to melt Steel, the more he knew it wasn't just about achieving his aim. He didn't just want Steel to prove he could get Steel; he wanted Steel because somewhere down the line he'd fallen in love with the man of steel.
So he'd go on trying. He'd go on trying to melt Steel.
