Obsolete Skills
From susan_peri, with whom I, yet again, share the same result.

It 's comforting to say that 'practice makes perfect'....
You are 'Gregg shorthand'. Originally designed to
enable people to write faster, it is also very
useful for writing things which one does not
want other people to read, inasmuch as almost
no one knows shorthand any more.

You know how important it is to do things
efficiently and on time. You also value your
privacy, and (unlike some people) you do not
pretend to be friends with just everyone; that
would be ridiculous. When you do make friends,
you take them seriously, and faithfully keep
what they confide in you to yourself.
Unfortunately, the work which you do (which is
very important, of course) sometimes keeps you
away from social activities, and you are often
lonely. Your problem is that Gregg shorthand
has been obsolete for a long time.

What obsolete skill are you?

And we had the curse word in common too.

I got to be QBasic (which I remember with nostalgic fondness)... but I'm sulking because it wouldn't let pick my real favourite colour.

Red. *shrugs*

Which, of course, I knew I knew as soon as I'd turned both computers off and couldn't be bothered to turn them back on. I was amazed to see that colour missing.

J asks 'is it puce'?

OMG I haven't thought about the Puce Goose in a long time. Thank him for me, for reminding me. I'm using this icon to show my gratitude.

Have done that very thing.

I also got Gregg shorthand,
how nice I always wanted to be able to do that ;-)

nakeisha From: nakeisha Date: 19th August 2005 20:13 (UTC) (Link)
:-)

I learnt shorthand once - correction I tried to learn it. Actually got my 70wpm, but it and I never gelled. So I really used my own over the years.

Wel done for at least trying.

I tried to come up with my own but like abbreviations I could never figure out what it meant afterward!

ROFL Oh, yes. Oh, yes. Been there. Done that. Got the.....
probodie From: probodie Date: 19th August 2005 18:01 (UTC) (Link)
I got Latin, which is ironic as I wanted to study Latin - but they wouldnt let me without having Maths. Being as I got a 5 in my CSE!!! in maths, I thought it rather stupid to be forced into something that a) I HATED and b) I was rubbish at!

Oh well LOL
nakeisha From: nakeisha Date: 19th August 2005 20:15 (UTC) (Link)
Okaaaaaaaaay.

So why, pray, did you need Maths to study Latin???

Will ask hubby later - he tends to know these things (he used to teach Maths and did Latin at school).

At least with Latin you never had to worry about pesky punctuation :-)
probodie From: probodie Date: 19th August 2005 20:18 (UTC) (Link)
I have no idea but I got "If you want to study Latin, you have to do Maths." I was "Well, why? I dont like Maths." "Because you do. Latin and Maths, then?"

I went "No forget it. There is no use me doing something I hate and am rubbish at.Bye!"

Was really pissed off about it, but I dont think I've done too badly out of life so far!
caffyolay From: caffyolay Date: 19th August 2005 18:13 (UTC) (Link)
I was Latin. I think probodie and I had better get together to start studying. :-)

Hey, we disagree again! Twice inside a week or two, spooky!!!
gilda_elise From: gilda_elise Date: 19th August 2005 18:47 (UTC) (Link)
Funny, I never thought of this as an obsolete skill. Probably because my sister knows it and still uses it every once in awhile.
nakeisha From: nakeisha Date: 19th August 2005 20:18 (UTC) (Link)
It's not really taught any more - except in some fee paying schools over here, but even then it's dying out. But I wouldn't have called it 'obsolete' in the way other skills are.
the_cornettist From: the_cornettist Date: 19th August 2005 23:13 (UTC) (Link)
I'm split personality again ROFL

I was being a bit flippant with my answers, and it told me I was French. Not impressed was I. So I did it again, seriously this time, and I too am Gregg Shorthand. Trying to recreate the French thing, I got juggling (??). C'est la vie, que sera, sera etc etc.
nakeisha From: nakeisha Date: 20th August 2005 06:58 (UTC) (Link)
:-)

I'm not entirely certain how being French is an obsolete skill. But there you go... Glad you did it again - seriously and are happier with your results.
the_cornettist From: the_cornettist Date: 20th August 2005 08:56 (UTC) (Link)
No, neither do I.

Still, I didn't consider being likened to the French language a compliment, I didn't get on too well with French at school - could never get the inflection right. Although a large part of the summary does suit me - very diplomatic am I, and liked the idea of vicious sarcasm!

It all comes back to I can't make a decision, even in a quiz!

:-) Oh, yes. I know that feeling. And quite often I find that I could answer at least one question two ways and still be completely honest!
frau_flora From: frau_flora Date: 19th August 2005 23:34 (UTC) (Link)
I got shorthand, too, and I don´t know what to make of it. The bit about privacy and friends seems to be true, though.
nakeisha From: nakeisha Date: 20th August 2005 07:10 (UTC) (Link)
The majority of folk on my flist got this one.

For me a lot of it is pretty darn accurate. I never minded if work kept me away from socialising, as I never was one for doing much of that. But I can't say I ever considered myself lonely.
dinahmt From: dinahmt Date: 20th August 2005 07:58 (UTC) (Link)
I got 'Growing your own vegetables' which made me laugh because that's what I do and folk think I'm weird, which I am.
nakeisha From: nakeisha Date: 20th August 2005 10:34 (UTC) (Link)
:-) Nice one. You aren't weird, that's a good skill to have.

How are things?
