III. GENERAL QUESTIONS ABOUT THE STORIES
Stories already written but not yet posted: Three: One for ncis_tinsel (Gibbs/Ducky) - posting date 1st January 2008. Another (Gibbs/Ducky) short story that I was going to post to make my 'round number' for the year, but after I made the decision to delay posting this meme until I'd finished the edits on To Those Who Wait, I kept back. And finally a Fraser/Vecchio story that is a sequel to Things Not Said - as yet I haven't edited it.
WIPs: Too many!
Gibbs/Ducky - 35
Abby/McGee - 00
NCIS General Series - 01
Fraser/Vecchio - 02
Napoleon/Illya - 08
Silver/Steel - 02
Bodie/Doyle - 10
Other - 01
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
Given that I'd hoped to write a lot more longer stories this year, I thought my overall total would be less than it is. I have an on-going dilemma as I really do want to write longer stories, but I also thoroughly enjoy writing and crafting drabbles, double drabbles, triple drabbles, etc. Hitting an exact word count is good fun and I get a lot of pleasure out of it, as such my average word count is always going to end up disappointing me.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2008?
Pretty much everything under NCIS General Fandom. I wouldn't ever have thought I'd write DiNozzo with anyone, and yet paired him with Jeanne, Maddie Tyler and Ziva. Nor did I think I'd write femslash (Jenny/Ziva) nor gen stories and I did quite a few of those.
Did you take any writing risks this year? (See above for unexpected pairings, etc.) What did you learn from them?
Yes, branching out in NCIS. That I can write outside of my OTPs (albeit, I hasten to add, not my OTPs with other people), that I can write gen, het, femslash and that, from the comments I got, I do it rather well. It's been very gratifying to have such an array of comments on these 'branching out' stories. Oh, and that I can also enjoy myself doing this - and that is what it is all about.
Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?
IV. STORY SPECIFIC QUESTIONS
My favourite story this year. Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest:
Gibbs/Ducky: The Best Birthday Gift Of All. Gibbs somehow forgets Ducky's birthday, but he finds a unique way of putting things right. I thoroughly enjoyed writing this story and was really happy with the result - and I was all the more happier at the response from the person for whom the story had been written (adriannacoylho) who loved it.
Non-Gibbs/Ducky: Facts Of Life (Abby/McGee - NCIS). Set immediately after Dog Tags. Gibbs goes to see Abby. It 'fixed' a piece of canon that I, and quite a few other people did not like, as it was so out of character.
My best story this year:
Gibbs/Ducky: My Son's Boyfriend. Set towards the end of Season Two, after The Meat Puzzle. The true nature of the relationship between Gibbs and Ducky becomes widely known about when Mrs. Mallard turns up at the NCIS offices one morning demanding to see her 'son's boyfriend'. Upon talking to her, Gibbs learns that Ducky has apparently been kidnapped; a search of Ducky's Reston home confirms this. Despite the best efforts of him and his team, there appears to be no leads. And then Gibbs is sent a letter and the sharp eyes of McGee reveal more than the writer necessarily intended. It is then a race against time to see if Gibbs can find his lover before it is too late.
Non-Gibbs/Ducky: You Are The One (Fraser/Vecchio - Due South). Set during the first season. The move from friendship to lovership is both so simple and yet so complex.
Story most under appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Gibbs/Ducky: The universe generally doesn't appreciate Gibbs/Ducky like they should *chuckles* It's very hard to say because the Gibbs/Ducky universe is generally very appreciative of my stories. However, if I had to pick one I'll go with Aftermath. Ducky returns home early from a Medical Examiners' Conference to find a huge shock awaiting him. But I suspect that might have more to do with when I posted it (27th December) than anything else. I think it's quite a powerful story and not fluffy at all.
Non-Gibbs/Ducky: Not An Auspicious Start (Giles - Buffyverse) which is the first story in my 'Private Watcher Diary Of Rupert Giles'.
Most fun story:
Gibbs/Ducky: In The Cards. Ducky challenges Jethro to a game of cribbage as both men claim to have been unbeaten in their younger days. The stakes are somewhat different from usual, and the outcome a surprise for both of them.
Non-Gibbs/Ducky: Interrupting Abby. (Abby/McGee - NCIS). A fun little double drabble. Poor Abby gets interrupted by every member of the team.
Gibbs/Ducky: None. I can in all honesty say that there wasn't a single story in which I was disappointed (I wouldn't have posted it had I been thus).
Non-Gibbs/Ducky: None. I can in all honesty say that there wasn't a single story in which I was disappointed (I wouldn't have posted it had I been thus).
Most sexy story:
Gibbs/Ducky: A First Time For Everything. Gibbs and Ducky meet for the first time and sparks fly.
Non-Gibbs/Ducky: Not that sexy but . . . Making The First Move (Fraser/Vecchio - Due South). Ray notices something odd about Benny and acts on it.
Story with single sexiest moment:
Gibbs/Ducky: 'Twas The Night Before Christmas. For a moment when Ducky proves the adage ''a climax is more with the mind than with the body', when he reacts to Jethro's words more than to the physical moment.
Non-Gibbs/Ducky: Part Of Her (DiNozzo/Ziva - NCIS). Tony wants to give Ziva something special.
Story with single sweetest moment:
This is more than a bit difficult as 'sweet' and 'Nikki' are fairly synonymous. However . . .
Gibbs/Ducky: Christmas Kisses. The team are 'selling' kisses and Ducky does amazingly well (leading DiNozzo to ask 'what's Ducky got that I haven't?'). And then once all the ladies have gone, Gibbs realises that there is one person Ducky would really like to kiss. And so he goes and 'buys' his own Christmas kiss from his lover.
Non-Gibbs/Ducky: Parents Are Always Parents (Fraser/Vecchio - Due South). Fraser's parents visit him and tell him to 'go and get his man'.
Most Unintentionally Telling:
Gibbs/Ducky: I honestly cannot think of any story that would fit this 'category'. If my stories have a message at all, it tends to be an intentional one, one that I have thought about.
Non-Gibbs/Ducky: I honestly cannot think of any story that would fit this 'category'. If my stories have a message at all, it tends to be an intentional one, one that I have thought about.
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
This is really another of those when I don't really have an answer, as really I can't say any of my stories do that to a great extent. However, I have chosen a couple out of the whole 'playing the game' thing.
Gibbs/Ducky: Tomorrow Is Another Day. In his grief Jethro makes a comment he will live to regret. Because bastard as Gibbs is, I never thought he'd say something so utterly cruel to Ducky - even though he instantly regretted it and said it out of grief, I still was surprised he was able to say it. And also Ducky because he left Gibbs, left him at the moment it could be argued Gibbs needed him most. All that in a mere 100 words *g*
Non-Gibbs/Ducky: Keep Out (Napoleon/Illya - The Man From U.N.C.LE.). It's a pre-slash story where Napoleon won't tell Illya how he feels about him. I'd always thought that Napoleon wouldn't hesitate to tell Illya how he felt.
Gibbs/Ducky: You Bastard. Gibbs shocks both Ducky and Fornell. The surprise is a double one. Firstly the story itself and secondly the fact that I haven't yet written the sequel(s) to it to explain it.
Non-Gibbs/Ducky: Parting Is Such Sweet Sorrow (Jenny/Ziva - NCIS). Ziva and Jenny end their relationship. The surprise, however, doesn't come from what the story is about, but rather the fact I wrote it in the first place. Jenny was never a favourite character of mine, even though she did grow on me somewhat towards the end. And although I saw Jenny/Ziva from the beginning of their appearance I doubted I'd ever care enough about either of them to write them in a story of their own and not in a negative way.
Hardest story to write:
Well as conceited as this will sound I tend not to find stories hard to write, not really. I have times when the words won't flow or the story seems to be going nowhere, but generally that is fleeting and I'll stop what I'm writing and start/continue something else and when I then return to the story all is well. However . . .
Gibbs/Ducky: One Shot. Ducky is dead. And Fornell finally tells Gibbs how he feels about him, but he knows it won't do any good. It was hard to write as it had me sniffling from beginning to end.
Non-Gibbs/Ducky: Refusal Was Not An Option (Napoleon/Illya - The Man From U.N.C.L.E.). Napoleon gives Illya an order that Illya has no option but to carry out. Again it was the subject matter that had me sniffing as I wrote it.
Easiest story to write:
Gibbs/Ducky: Family Solidarity. Set during and after Silent Night. Ducky, concerned about his young assistant, manages to find time to pop around to his apartment. Later both Jimmy and Jethro surprise Ducky, albeit in different ways, as the team show just what a family they are. Sadly one of the ncis_gibbsducky Yuletide Exchange 2008 writers dropped out without word at the very last second, so this was a twelfth hour story written to erehwon6's prompts and I just found the words came and the story was written seemingly without any effort at all.
Non-Gibbs/Ducky: Technologically Challenged (Gibbs & McGee - NCIS). Gibbs needs to buy something and turns to McGee for help. Technophobe Gibbs wants to buy Ducky a birthday present he really wants, so turns to his pet geek for help. It was great fun to write and again it flowed so naturally and easily.
