A book question for Americans on my f-list

I'm asking here rather than just Googling, as I think the personal knowledge/aspect will be better.

I'm looking for the names of some children's authors  that were popular (or even unpopular) in America in the late 80s and throughout the 90s. The child in question is female and is eight in 1992. She is brighter than average, has a keen mind and loves reading; I hate to use the 'C' word, but Daddy is a high powered lawyer so we're looking at a middle-class child and she is brought up around books. She's home schooled.

The authors themselves don't have to be American, they can be British, Canadian, whatever. What I'm looking for is who was read, who was popular at that time. Or indeed who was 'unpopular' and not necessarily considered 'suitable' by the so-called experts.

Thank you in advance for any help.
