Some bad new for NCIS fanfic fen
I have just heard that The NCIS Fanfic Archive is going to close its doors in the next day or two.

According to the person running the site there are just far too many visitors for the server to be able to cope and the archivist is unable to keep it going.

She is going to leave it up for a couple of days so that people can retrieve their stories, if they don't have them elsewhere, but then it's closing down. So if any NCIS writers do have stories there and haven't got a copy elsewhere, I suggest you toddle over there and retrieve them.

It's a great shame that it's closing down, I know it was a very popular archive with both writers and readers.

There is another NCIS fanfic site - MTAC - I suspect this will get a lot busier.

Awwww that is such a shame. Really.

It is *sigh*

A couple of people have suggested that she move to another supplier and also do what a fair few archives do, have a donation button. One person was saying she ran such an archive and only had to pay something like $20.00 at the end of the year, as the rest had been paid by fen, as little as $2.00 or $5.00 can really add up.

I'd happily donate a small amount, and several people had already said they would too.

So, we'll see.

That sounds a very good idea. And yes if you havea lto of people using an archive and donating it all adds up.

Fingers crossed that idea works out it would be shame for the NCIS fandom to lose such an important archive.

I thought so too. And it's amazing how much the odd dollar here and there can add up.

I'm hoping and indeed that's true. Fingers crossed.

It's always sad when an archive is closed. But the important thing is that there seems to be many people writing and reading the stories!

*hugs*

I'm hoping someone finds a solution. The thing is that without it I suspect a lot of people won't read/write as there are far more stories go there than on say LJ or other places. The other archive has a very small number of stories, in comparison.

So we'll see.

Thank you for the hugs.

It's a shame, it really is. Especially as it's so well organised and really easy to search, etc. I'm hoping, as are many people, that there can be a way found to save it.

Well I can try, but there is actually a NCISWiki of its own (and I don't think that gets a huge amount of input) and only yesterday we discovered that CBS have their own 'official' NCISWiki too.

Just so you know.

Has anyone offered to take it over or cover the costs?

People are making suggestions along those lines, yes. A few people have suggested what happens with the archives they run, they basically get the vast amount of the costs via fannish donations; and people have suggested other hosters. It's a very high traffic site, and the girl who runs it says it needs a dedicated server and costs are going to run at $300+ per month!

This isn't so much for the canon as it is for the fandom. I think that makes the scope different.

I'm pretty sure it covers the fandom as well. I'll try to dig out the URL. I honestly can't remember it. Having said that it might well have a G/Di bias, but I don't know. It's not meant to have.

Not surprised. This is CBS. They have one for CSI. It's a fantastic wank fest of messiness and navigational issues.

I had a quick look at it and my first thought was 'how can this be official when anyone can post anything?'

Aww shoot! I liked that archive!

Me too.

So do a lot of people. And I fear that if it does go, the people who post/read there won't all move to MTAC and thus NCIS will lose writers/readers :-(

There have been various suggestions on one of the LJ comms she posted too and on the YH list, so it just might keep going. But . . . I guess a lot really depends on her level of interest still, as much as money.

She's apparently looking into a possibility, but isn't holding out that much hope.

I believe she's had to already take it down because it was crashing her other archive sites.

The announcement was made on the YH mailing list and also on ncis_slash http://community.livejournal.com/ncis_slash/161776.html
