NCIS Polls
Last year I posted a poll to see if there was any consensus as to which season of NCIS was favourite.

There was indeed a consensus.

Season Two was considered the best season
Season One the second best
Season Three the worst

So a year on, with Season Four now finished and no doubt a change in people who are in NCIS fandom/watch the show (some will have left/stopped watching, others will have come into the fandom/started to watch), I thought I'd try it again.

I appreciate that for people outside of America who are not able to obtain the episodes and as such are reliant on their TV station airing it, that you might not as yet have seen all (or any) of season four and because of this, I have left it as long as possible before posting the polls. However, with Season Five 'just around the corner', so to speak, I wanted to ensure that I could get the results posted before Season Five airs.

The second poll is about favourite episodes. I have my doubts as to whether there will be a consensus here, given the amount of different ships, as well as multi-ships and non-ships that exist within the fandom. However, it will be very interesting to see if there is any kind of consensus at all.

You don't need to have watched all four seasons in order to vote. If you've only seen two seasons, then just vote for your favourite episode for those seasons.

Note: Where an episode has been a two-parter, I have listed the episode as one choice (i.e. Kill Ari (Parts 1&2) rather than separate episodes.

Have answered the first poll ;-)

I'll have to think a bit more about the second one. I am sure you can guess why.
nakeisha From: nakeisha Date: 12th September 2007 12:28 (UTC) (Link)
The first is easier, methinks. Thank you for taking it.

:-)) Indeed. I think I can.

Like the first commenter, I've only answered the first poll so far, because I need more time for the second.
Also... it's fun to see how many people put the seasons in the same order. Damn right, the second was the best. *g*

No worries.

I plan to leave at least a week before I do the results. If I hadn't put the poll together, I'd have need time to think too ;-)

Indeed, it is. I'm fully expecting to see Two stay as the best :-) I loved Season Two.

For season 4 fav ep: I picked I don't have a favourite - I like them all the same 'cause I didn't like any of them that much!

I like your logic :-) That's a good one. I'll have to try to remember it, should I do it again for next year.

'I don't have a favourite - I like/dislike them all the same'.

Hang on, you didn't like 'Smoked' any more than the others?????

I really seem to be in the minority for liking season 4. It wasn't fantastic, but i liked it much better than season 3. Much more growth, character development. Ziva was much less annoying (and less on-screen, not an insignificant detail!). I'm eager to see how Season 5 plays out!

nakeisha From: nakeisha Date: 13th September 2007 09:24 (UTC) (Link)
I preferred Season Four to Season Three, but sadly, IMHO, that wasn't saying much *sigh*

To me things went downhill after Season Two.

One thing I really liked about Season Four was the way Tony grew and showed us that he wasn't the shallow fool he'd seemed to be for the first three seasons (not that he could have been, Gibbs would never have kept him around as an agent had he been). And I also liked the way that Ziva became part of the team.

Wow, I feel really strange for loving Season 4 - I don't know, maybe it's because I'm quite active in the House, MD fandom, where the lastest season of canon has been a load of absolute BOLLOCKS, but even the weird La Grenoiulle (I have so totally misspelt that) and the Jeanne thing hasn't fazed me too much. There were some really fantastic episodes, too - 'Shalom', 'Dead Man Walking', 'Grace Period' (my God, what an amazing piece of television) and 'Driven' were all damn good.

The lightheartedness of Season 2, however, was what amde me vote it tas the best. Oh my. Especially the dynamic between Kate and DiNozzo - I miss that SO MUCH. But Ziva has been an intriguing and pretty damn awesome replacement, in my opinion - they're almost polar opposites and it's been fun watcing how she fits into the team, too. What is it about Season 3 and 4 people dislike? I'm curious.

I suppose peoples' preferences regarding Ziva and Kate have influenced the season polls majorly. From what I've seen, most people tend to either hate Ziva and love Kate, or the reverse.

Also, S1? I bought the DVDs with my sister a few months ago, and we marathonned it and really didn't like it! It's like, where are all the insanely cute moments that are littered though S2-S4? Where are the headslaps and all the character traits we've come to love? Meh, anyway. This has gotten really tl;dr, I'm off.
nakeisha From: nakeisha Date: 13th September 2007 09:38 (UTC) (Link)
I fully expected, I confess, for Season Four to be the most disliked.

I felt it was better than Season Three, but sadly, IMHO, that isn't saying much.

I watch House, M.D. too, watch as opposed to being in fandom, although it's a show I love and hubby and I talk about the eps pretty much as we in fandom do, with a couple of exceptions. And my view is different from yours; I didn't think the canon was that bad. BUT, I hasten to add, I could see how it could be viewed that way by people into certain pairs.

And what's interesting is that you list 'Grace Period' amongst your favourite Season Four eps, for me it was way down the bottom of my list. In fact (checks own website) on the enjoyment front it came second worse only to 'Angel Of Death'. 'Dead Man Walking' I really enjoyed that.

I disliked Ziva in Season Three (and no, I wasn't a Kate girl), but in Season Four, she really came into her own. I liked the way that she made the decision to be part of the team, whereas in Season Three, she wasn't.

I think it was 'Hiatus' and 'Shalom' that were telling for Ziva. Firstly to be snapped at by Ducky, who'd never normally do that, for not knowing to which hospital Gibbs had been taken and his 'dig' that Tony would know; then to be slapped by Abby for basically not caring. And then in 'Shalom' where the whole team were on her side and believed her to be innocent, unlike her in 'Probie' where she'd assumed that McGee was guilty, I watched her make that decision; she was going to be for the team and not Jenny's girl.

I don't think it's Kate and Ziva, at least not alone, that have influenced people's choices. Yes, for Kate and Ziva fen, certainly, but also I'm pretty sure that it's also to do with Gibbs/DiNozzo fen, a lot of whom dislike Season Four with a passion because of the complete change in characters.

What is about S3&4 people dislike? Hmmm, how long have you got :-)

Seriously, I can't put my finger on it and say 'it's so and so'. As I said I wasn't a huge Kate fan, but I am a huge S1&2 fan. I didn't like Jenny or Ziva from the off, but it was more than that. To my mind it was like watching a different show when S3 started. Not just with the change in characters, but the change in the whole show, the feel, the interaction, the unexplainable, for want of a better word. I've been trying for two seasons to sum it up, and I can't :-( All I know is that it's far, far more than just Jenny and Ziva. Everything changed.

And you didn't like S1, it's my second favourite :-) For me it's:

2
1
4
3

Thanks for sharing your thoughts in depth, really. I enjoyed reading what you said and seeing how in some things we are poles apart in others not so far.
curly_the_sue From: curly_the_sue Date: 13th September 2007 13:53 (UTC) (Link)
I love these two polls!
My favorite season is season three. I'm a huge Ziva-fan and I love the dynamic of that season. It has some great episodes.
But unfortunetly season four is the worst season in my opinion. There is too much of the of the whole relationship-thing between Tony and jeanne and Gibbs and Mann (and Ziva , besides "shalom", lacked of her unique style, that she had in season three. she has absolutly no development in season four, while the other characters have.) But the most annoying in season four is the whole "la grenouille"-story. It seems to me like they tried to create another ari. But it feels wrong that its not gibbs enemie, but jens, because she hadn't much screentime before and all of a sudden it's all about her.
I'm really lokking forward to season five and I hope that it this season goes "back to the roots".
nakeisha From: nakeisha Date: 13th September 2007 14:59 (UTC) (Link)
Thank you - I'm glad you like them.

It's very interesting seeing how other people view the seasons. Now to me, Ziva did develop, she developed tremendously because she decided to become part of the team and as such her character developed in that way, to me anyway. I loved the ep 'Dead Man Walking', I thought that was a superb episode for her and we really saw her character.

Not that I'm a huge Ziva fan, I didn't care for her in Season 3 (and that wasn't because I was a Kate fan, I wasn't), but in Season 4 I really felt she really grew.

It's interesting to hear you say that there was too much of Tony and Jeanne and also Jenn and La Grenouille. I've elsewhere (and more than once) dubbed this season 'The Jenny, Tony And Jeanne Show', because to me that is what it became, at the expense of the other characters - including Gibbs, and it's his show ;-)

As for Lt. Col. Hollis Mann - the less said about her, the better :-)

'Back to the roots', I'll second that. But I want to go back to the roots of the style and general feeling/interaction of S1&2.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts;as I said it's really interesting to see how other people see things, and how we all see the same eps, but see them in different ways.
sageharper From: sageharper Date: 13th September 2007 16:35 (UTC) (Link)
Well I do still enjoy the series and everything, but the moments/eps that really wow me are getting rarer. They really found their groove in season 2, 1 & 3 are about equal, and 4 ... meh.
Maybe I'm just getting higher expectations, but something certainly has shifted.

The last season seemed to have story arches [odd choice when TPTB can't do continuity] and I have to admit that doesn't really appeal to me. Just seemed to drag on and complicate things. It also doesn't help that the characters who got more attention are the ones I don't particulary care for, and ruined some of the others.

Gibbs ... words fail me. His 'love interest' subplot is a trainwreck. I am most impressed with Mark Harmon's acting there, lol.

Tony as a character has crossed the line between 'development' and 'OOC'. I keep hoping/praying there will be a glorious moment when it's all revealed as a cover or something, and he gets back IC. In a weird way now I now notice the quirks and complexites of his character [in earlier seasons] which I wouldn't have otherwise.

I'm also pissed that my 'Ziva as a lesbian' theory pretty much got jossed (and the way it happened ... ugh cliche much!), but meh.

On the upside McGee has developed well as a character. And Abby, Ducky & Palmer were adorable as always :)

Anyway, as for the eps ...
1. My other left foot - just because it's the first ep I saw, and has all the elements I still love.
2. Meat Puzzler, though Lt. Jane Doe is equal ... for the same reasons ;) I like SWALK too.
3. Bloodbath - Abby & Gibbs totally shine.
4. Smoked - as close to perfect as can be hoped for. Driven was fab too (the sexual harassment part was fun). Depends what ship I'm in the mood for.
nakeisha From: nakeisha Date: 14th September 2007 10:06 (UTC) (Link)
For pretty much the first time we disagree to an extent :-) For me Season 3 is the worst season and squee moments were far fewer than 1. The best I can recall is when 'my dear Jethro' became canon :-)

I truly think they lost their way when Season Two ended *sigh*

The last season seemed to have story arches [odd choice when TPTB can't do continuity]

*Chuckles madly* Oh, so well said!!!

They did indeed just drag on and on and on and . . . And I think that was the biggest problem; Jenn's obsession at the beginning was quite interesting, but I stopped caring after about the first or second episode of it. And they've dragged the whole 'he ruined my life' out so long, that in all honesty I'm not sure that the reason they come up with will be worth it. It went on far, far too long.

As for Gibbs and Mann . . .Well . . . Yes. You said it all.

Now for me, Tony became a really good character in this season, it was nice to see what we'd only had tiny glimpses of/had to guess at, but I do admit there were times when I did miss the Tony of old that riled Gibbs :-)

The whole Jenn/Ziva thing that was practically canon in S3 just vanished - oh, yes, I forgot it's called 'continuity' *eg*. It'll be interesting to see what they do with Ziva in S5.

McGee had a couple of great episodes. And I agree re: Abby, Ducky and Jimmy, but their involvement was too little - it was all about Jenn, Tony & Jeanne *sigh*

1. I love My Other Left Foot too. My favourite moment is that little scene between Gibbs and Ducky, when Gibbs just calls Ducky back because . . . Well, let's be honest for no reason at all :-)

2. LJD just tips the top space for me over TMP. SWAK was good, I really felt for Tony in it.

3. Bloodbath was one of the few really good S3 eps.

4. :-)) Indeed. Oh, and yes the whole sexual harassment thing was superb and Abby/McGee *bounce*
