Well J is safely at Birmingham airport - over three hours before the flight is due :-)

But it's one of those things, isn't it? If you leave in good time, there are no hold ups, if you risk leaving later then you get held up.

Now a short poll for those of you with websites, being the ever curious person I am.

Well, not really once a week, if you go to my updates page of my website, then you'll see I update quite irregularly.

Mostly because I code everything in HTML when MS Frontpage isn't working and I thought I'd thought of a better system to update my website too. (I did, actually! For years I named the fanfic page to the fanfic (for example; AMF would have been called AMF.htm) but that was really really messy. Now, I've named it after the fandom and then a number (ncis.htm is the index page for ncis. ncis045.htm is the page for the fic "Yours!" for example)) I keep a handwritten copy of all my file names of the website (although it's messy, of course).

Anyway, I update every once in a while, really.

Thank you. Yes, I can see what you mean.

I use Frontpage too for my website. And I use story names for mine, e.g ncis.yuletidecelebrations, s&s.theseductionofsteel, etc. etc. So do you number yours incrementally? I.E, does 'Yours' being 045, mean it's the 45th NCIS story you're written?

And thank you for your little comment on your update page *hugs*
toomuchfandom From: toomuchfandom Date: 14th March 2007 14:08 (UTC) (Link)
Yes, they're not really numbered in the right order (as I've told you earlier this week that I have the habit to lose fics), but yes. I'm currently up to 046, so I've already written 46 NCIS fics, including the crossovers.

My MFU AU has a different system, as I just number the chapters (MFU001.htm etc), just like my Pretender Monster fic (also not finished) (pretender001.htm) and the extra fics I've written for the Pretender are called Pretender001a.htm, 001b...)

Just when I have something to add, really.
nakeisha From: nakeisha Date: 14th March 2007 14:04 (UTC) (Link)
Thank you. That's what I do, but sometimes it can be several times a week, so I was wondering if I should do it more rigidly, i.e. once a week.

Safe journey to J. I bet you'll be glad to see him back. :-)

Thank you.

He did have a safe journey and yes, I am. Very much so.

Since it's just not my fics but others also I usualy do it every 6 weeks or try to - I put calls out when I get ready to update and pull all the material together, get it ready then do the updates.

Sometimes though if I just finished a large segment of the main Sylum story I'll do an update around then. Or if I'm doing massive changes in structure same concept.

But mainly its 6-8 weeks.

I've seen your site, it's impressive; you put a lot of hard work into that.

Quite different from just updating a website with your own stuff, I imagine. Quite different!
bjjones From: bjjones Date: 14th March 2007 16:45 (UTC) (Link)
Yeah it's a bit different. But since the core still centers around my stuff - I usualy do the udpates around major new stories I wrote or additions I make... :)

Though at times I did wish for a smaller easier site... *grins*

I haven't updated mine in ages. I doubt I shall ever catch up now.

*sigh*

It;s almost like LJ has become my website becuase it;s so easy I don't need to fiddle about with coding. Pasting

every line (esecially with my long dialogue fics) can get really tiring. Some time ago I wanted to try saving a file as a html word file and uploading to geocities and seeing if that worked but I never actually tried it so I have no idea if it works. If it did I'd probably update my website more often.

I can completely understand what you say about coding, etc. I hadn't realised what a hassle it was for you to upload your stories.

You should give the Word thing a try with Geocities; it might work. Or you could do something like a couple of my friends have done, when really they do turn LJ into their website and have one post that is their 'site' and keep that updated with story links and pictures, etc. and direct people to that, as a link.

Here are a couple:

Yeah the coding is the worst part but i think I might have ocme up witha cunning plan. If I upload my fics to Exwood (which I kinda should be doing) then if I click on view source I should get some coding I can use and simple copy/paste. I might try that. It's still a tad longwinded but it's quicker than doing it by hand...

Ooo now that it a good easier. It would make finding my fic a lot easier than it currently is. Especially specific stories.
maubast From: maubast Date: 15th March 2007 02:30 (UTC) (Link)
It actually depends on what kind of update it is. If I've just written several drabbles, I generally don't bother. If I have a story finished, I do update that as it's done because I don't usually post my fic on lists and the like.

(For the record, I only have one fic website online now - and I don't update it anymore because I don't write DS anymore)

Thank you for this, my dear.
