Winter: Bench (Lonely)

What is love?

I'm currently reading Please Sir not the original one, the one by Jack Sheffield, it's the fifth book in the 'Teacher' series. The lovely caffyolay bought me the first book I read and I've been hooked ever since.

It's a series set in the late 70s/early 80s about a Headmaster in a small village school in Yorkshire and I'd recommend it to anyone, it's highly readable and entertaining and has some wonderful characters. The kiddies come out with some amazing things and it's an example of this I want to share.

In the week's Religious Eduction lesson, the local Vicar asks a class of six and seven year olds 'What is love?'. Here are the four answers that are in the book.

- Mam putting on her perfume and Dad putting on his aftershave and going out to smell one another.

- Man kissing me to sleep each night.

- My Great Grandpa trying Great Grandma's shoe laces because her fingers are all bent.

- Mam giving Dad the biggest pork chop.

I thought they were all lovely answers, but the third one in particular really does sum it up, doesn't it? It's those kinds of things that really matter when it comes down to it. It's not about wine, roses, chocolates, jewellery, romantic dinners out, etc. etc. all the monetary things. They are nice, more than nice, but when it comes down to it, if you can't manage to tie your own shoes, you do need someone to tie them for you.
