maubast reminded me that when they made the change, they also altered the default to 'Do not Display'. This explains (I believe) why I have seen several people commenting on my f-list that they'd missed friends's birthdays, and that LJ had vanished them away. So if you do want your friends to see your DoB, in whatever format, you need to go to Edit Profile and select how you wish it to be displayed.
