Wimbledon 2017 - Day 10
Well, the less said about yesterday the better :-(

Sadly Andy went out. He started so well and raced to a set and a break up and then suddenly he pretty much gave away his serve and in a blink of the eye, Querrey had levelled the match. The third set was very similar with Andy again going up a break only to play a really poor service game and we we in a tie-break - which Andy won. Just as with Rafa a couple of nights ago, I thought the impetus was now with Andy and he'd win the fourth set. That sadly was not the case.

Sam Querrey upped his game and Andy began to struggle both with his game and with his hip injury and seemingly in a blink of an eye it was two sets all into the fifth and Querrey was up a break. In what seemed like virtually no time at all, the match was over and Sam Querrey had won and was through to his first ever grand slam semi final and Andy was out of the tournament :-(

Yes Andy was clearly injured, but I'm taking nothing at all away from Sam Querrey - he deserved to win. He outplayed Andy, he upped his game when necessary and playing an obviously injured player is actually jolly hard. Plus, Andy has had the injury all along, so it wasn't anything new. Querrey really did deserve to be in the semis - even if he seemed somewhat stunned to be there. On the day he was the better player.

Also Novak went out - not that I was completely surprised. I said to a good friend on Tuesday that if Novak didn't take to the court on Wednesday I wouldn't be surprised, due to the clear and pretty debilitating injury to his serving shoulder/elbow (I'm not quite sure which part it was). So when he pulled out just into the second set, I wasn't really surprised - disappointed, yes, but not surprised.

Of the other two matches, one went to five sets (with Cilic finally beating Rafa's by-then-exhausted conqueror) and the other (Federer vs. Raonic) to three. I was really surprised by Federer's match only going to three. I had thought that would be a lot closer.

Anyway, enough of my woes and onto today and the ladies' semi finals.

Garbine Muguruza (Spanish) plays  Magdalena Rybarikova (Slovakian) and Venus Williams (American) plays Johanna Konta (British).

It's the first time since 1977 that a British lady has been in a Wimbledon semi final. Then it was Virginia Wade and she went onto win the championship in what was the Queen's Silver Jubilee year. Naturally now that Andy has gone out, British expectation is now even more on Jo. She does have a winning head-to-head against all three of the other ladies - but we all know about H2Hs *g* And Venus did beat her the last time they have played, although they have never played on grass.

Given how Jo is playing this year, given who she has beaten and how she has dug in and come back from being a set down and also who she beat at Eastbourne in the week before Wimbledon, I really do think Jo has a serious chance against Venus. That said, Venus has only lost once in a Wimbledon semi-final - last year against Angelique Kerber. So in truth it's probably 50:50 and will come down to a few points here and there - at least I hope that's the case and Jo isn't overwhelmed. She has been to a GS semi before, so that is something - but not at her home tournament.

As far as the other (the first match) goes I would expect Garbine to win. That said, I haven't actually seen Magdalena play this year and really don't know her at all - she really is the dark horse in the ladies' side this year and won her quarter very comprehensively. So who knows what could happen?

Given my support really doesn't seem to help players (in fact with all those who have gone out it seems to harm them *g*) I hardly dare say I want Jo and Garbine to win just in case I jeopardise them *g*

I really hope they are both good matches.
