I've had a few emails and LJ comments from yesterday asking me if I was okay, as in effect 'vanished off the face of the earth' all day, both on email and LJ.
This is why.
10:30 a.m. Me to J. "I'm just going to upload my website, then finish the NCIS story, then start to catch up on my overflowing inbox.
J. "Fine, let me know if you need any help."
11:00 a.m. Me to J: "It's up but it's not showing."
J: Okay, I'll have a look. It'll be something simple.
11:15 a.m. J: "Ah, got it. Your index page is faulty.
Me: But we both tested it in several browsers and checked the code.
J: "I know. Humour me, change something and re-upload."
Me: "Okay." I do so. "It's still not showing."
J: "Let me have another look."
Passing of several hours, during which J and I read (several times) all the FAQs our ISP has. Re-upload site (via a different FTP, maubast, we really like CuteFTP). And generally keep trying to sort it out.
4:30 p.m. Me, not knowing whether to scream or cry from the pain and exhaustion, collapses into armchair. Site still not showing.
5:00 p.m. J: "I've emailed PlusNet, because I can't get it to work properly either. I've put up holding pages for our site and your domain, but 'ours' appears on both sites. It won't recognise the sub-folder."
By this time I was in so much more pain than usual, had a thumping headache, couldn't get comfortable, so I didn't open my email or LJ.
Email from Plus.Net saying: "Any changes to domain folders take up to four hours to appear." J checks domain, voilà the correct holding page appears on my site address.
Now you'd think that they could actually say this in the section on 'adding a domain' wouldn't you? When it tells you what to do, how to add sub-folders, etc. etc. you'd think they might just mention this tiny fact? NO! In fact it says 'as soon as you upload it, your site is available.' Okay, so strictly speaking I guess that was true; the site was 'available', insofar as it was there, and I could view it from the folder structure, etc. but...
And of course because we were playing with it so much and trying different things in the sub-folder, despite spending all those hours on it, we never actually let four hours elapse.
::Still muttering darkly about people who can't give you one tiny bit of simple, but really useful information::
And just because it's easy, I bring you a meme which I snaffled from susan_peri
|You are Ocean Blue|
You're both warm and practical. You're very driven, but you're also very well rounded.
You tend to see both sides to every issue, and people consider you a natural diplomat.
PS toomuchfandom & sharpiesgal, you know the story I mentioned that was at about 7,500 words? Well it's kind of grown a bit, tis now nearly 13,000.
