Thirty Days Things That Make Me Happy Meme. Day 10
Things That Make Me Happy - Day 10

MUSIC

I love music and have it on first thing, pretty much all the time during the day when I'm on my own and when I go to bed. I like to have something on in the background, even if I'm not necessarily consciously listening to each song or piece of music. I miss it if it's not there as it helps add to my level of contentedness.

As with my reading tastes, my taste in music is pretty eclectic. I like classical music, opera (I admit I prefer lighter operas to really heavy ones), country & western, pop from the '60s, 70s & 80s, folk, easy listening, music from musicals and films. I confess I'm not up on modern music and have no idea what garage music and several other types are. However, basically as long as the song or piece of music in effect 'tells a story' and carries a good tune, makes sense and doesn't split my head open I like it.

For the most part I listen to the music on my various iPod play lists, but first thing in the morning and on Saturday and Sunday afternoons I listen to Classic FM. I can easily write to continuous music, but find it harder to write to a radio show where the presenter chats between pieces, hence one of the reasons why I listen to my iPod more than the radio.

I really would hate to be without music.

Well, of course, music. :-) And we seem to have the same taste in music: classical, light opera (Italian over German,) oldies, musicals and film. But classical is about the only type of music I can listen to while writing, probably because of the lack of vocals. Docking stations have come in handy, too, so I rarely listen to the radio anymore.

Indeed. Oh, that's lovely to know we have similar tastes in music.

It's odd because I can write to the sung word, but not the spoken word. Hmmm. Very odd. They do indeed; we have them on our various stereo systems and our bedside clock/radio/alarm has them too.

Isn't that the truth about music and writing? For me, it has to be classical or I get all mucked up in the words of whatever song is playing. Still, to write without music is tough.

It really is.

How interesting both you and Gilda (above) have to have classical music to write to. I can quite understand why and given I can't write to a spoken voice, it's kind of odd I can to sung words *g*

The words distract me - it's the same that I can't sleep to music - it wakes me right up.

It's great how different everyone is.

Interestingly I find it hard to read to music with words; I tend to skip through any such tracks when I'm listening to my iPod and reading at night. I listen to classical music when reading. I go through phases when I fall asleep to music, but again it's always classical.

Indeed it is.

Gosh that is an eclectic list of music! We differ in this as only like music occasionally, last thing at night as I surf my sites is generally it. I'm fairly eclectic but not as much as you. Like you though I'm really not up on modern music and Pointless questions which involve that are totally beyond me. *g*

It is rather. We differ in something! Actually, although we've never actually discussed it, I had a feeling you weren't a music person as much as I am. That's a nice time to listen.

Hee - it doesn't surprise me that you're not up on modern music. I know! I hate those rounds. In some ways they are worst then a general football round. At least with football I can guess a club, but with modern artists, not a chance *g* Although thanks to Pointless and Eggheads I can remember the names of some artists and groups.

I have to listen to music everyday too. If I don't I feel 'funny' and like there is something missing from my day. It has to be music I want to listen to too.

I'm all right with writing & reading to singing, but not if there's a spoken word bit - too distracting.

Yay for another daily music listener. Oh, yes. Me too.

It's interesting how for some of us the sung word is fine, but not the spoken word, whereas for others it's any words. Now oddly enough I read to classical music as I find singing distracting, yet I can write to singing.
