Hmmm, this is a really tough one as there are so many wonderful episodes in Buffy and so many I love.
However, after quite a lot of thought I'm going to with 'Once More With Feeling' which is the musical episode. It may seem to be a strange choice (I know from other fandoms that peoplw aren't generally fans of musical episodes) but for me it just works so well.
Again, it's a good balance throughout with light and dark and fun and laughter and tears and we see a lot of character development in one episode and learn things too and even though it's no longer the team from the earlier seasons you can a good feeling of team work and pulling together in this episode.
I also have to admire the actors and actresses who aren't natural singers for being real troopers and taking part and doing so well. For me the song of the episode, not in terms of content but in terms of talent, is the duet Giles and Tara perform. Strictly speaking it's not a duet insofar as they are not singing to one another or even the same song or even to the same person, but it's so wonderfully done.
In fact we like this episode so much we actually have the individual DVD and the CD.
A side note: One thing I always think Joss missed out on was not getting Anthony Stewart Head, Amber Benson and Andy Hallett (from Angel together to produce a CD - because they are all such wonderful singers.
