However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results – Winston Churchill

Tim hurried back from Abby's lab; the thing she'd called him down to help her with which should have only taken ten minutes had ended up taking fifty, which had put him behind with the important task Gibbs had given him. At least he'd done the hard work though, now it was just a case of -

He came to a dead stop by his desk and stared at Tony who was sitting in front of a pile of files with a smug look on his face.

Tim felt sweat break out over his body and his pulse rate began to increase. He took a deep breath and counted to ten; then took another and counted to twenty, but the rage was just increasing as he stared at Tony.

For nearly eight years he had put up with Tony's idiotic behavior, the way he belittled him so often; all the thankless jobs he'd made him do; all the jibes, jokes, cutting and nasty remarks and only a handful of times had he hit back. And all but one of those times he'd felt guilty afterwards. But this was different.

"What the hell have you done, DiNozzo?"

Tony blinked and stared at him. "Hey, Tim, don't get your panties in a twist. I was bored so I thought I'd help you."

"Help me?"

"Yeah. I saw how long it was taking you to sort the files. I know most geeks while a whiz on computers, can't handle a simple paper filing system, but with all my years as a cop I can file in my sleep. So I thought I'd help you. It's easy really. Look I'll show you -" He came to an abrupt halt as Tim moved nearer to him.

Again Tim tried to calm himself down; again he lost. "You idiot!" he snarled, his voice low and deadly. "You stupid idiot. No wonder you only got a Phys Ed degree, I'm amazed you even managed that!" As soon as he spoke, he regretted the words, but he was still too angry to take them back.

Tony shrank back in Tim's chair. "What have I done?" he asked. "I thought I was -"

"You thought? That's a first. Just get out of my chair, DiNozzo, and leave me to sort your mess out."

Tony stood up. "But I -"

"They were already sorted, okay? Sorted in the way I needed them so I can input them in the correct way and finish the task Gibbs set me. Now it's going to -"

"Going to what, McGee?"

"Boss. Er," Tim paused and glanced at Tony who looked petrified. He took a deep breath. "Sorry, boss, the thing you gave me to do will take longer than I thought. I'll work though lunch and stay until it's done."

Gibbs stared at him the look inviting Tim to say more. But Tim just sat down at his desk and started to recreate the highly complex system he'd spent three hours creating before he'd gone to help Abby.

Be great in act as you have been in thought - Shakespeare

It was gone eight when Tim finally finished the job. He leaned back in his chair, closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose. His eyes stung from staring at the intricate rows of codes. He'd barely moved from his desk, pausing only long enough to visit the men's room when absolutely necessary and only once grabbing a cup of coffee - that he now realized he'd let get cold.

He was suddenly aware of someone standing in front of his desk; he opened his eyes to see Gibbs holding out a Styrofoam cup towards him. "Here, Tim."

Tim sat upright and took the proffered cup. "Thanks, boss." He took a sip, then another as he realized just how thirsty he was. "I've finished the job you gave me."

"Gathered that."

"Sorry it took so long." He winced and waited for Gibbs to tell him 'never say you're sorry'.

However, instead Gibbs just stared at him before saying quietly, "I know you did your best, Tim. Now go home."

"But, boss, I still have to -"

"I said go home, McGee." Gibbs's tone was the one no one argued with. So after taking another sip, Tim logged out, turned off his computer, stood up, grabbed his things, called 'goodnight' to Gibbs and hurried out of the squad room.

Tony had left a couple of hours before, after spending most of the day casting Tim guilty and apologetic looks. More than once, when Gibbs had left the squad room, Tony had looked as if he'd wanted to say something, but he hadn't.

Tim let himself into his apartment and headed for the bathroom to turn on the shower. A long, hot shower followed by food and a beer was what he needed. As he showered, letting the hot water pound over his body, he groaned as he realized he had nothing but cereal in the cupboards - he'd planned to go shopping on the way home. Cereal would have to do; he was too exhausted to go out again.

As he dressed, the doorbell rang. Groaning he trudged across the room. "Tony!" he exclaimed, noticing the large pizza box Tony held. "What do you want?"

"To apologize." Tony pushed past Tim before Tim could speak. "And," he said, shutting the door, "to say thanks for not snitching on me to Gibbs."

Tim shrugged. "I'd never do that." He sank down onto the couch.

"I know that," Tony said. "Look, Tim, I really am sorry. I thought I was helping. I'd never deliberately screw something up for you; you know that, don't you? At least nothing important," he added.

Tim opened his eyes and looked up at Tony. Finally for what felt like the first time that day he smiled. "Yeah, Tony," he said. "I know you wouldn't. Plates are in the cupboard, napkins next to them, cutlery in the drawer under the sink and the beer's in the fridge."

Tony grinned and gave a salute before hurrying off into the kitchen area.

Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it - Confucius

The empty pizza box, used napkins, dirty plates and cutlery sat on the table; for once Tim wasn't in any hurry to clear them away. Tony and he were on their third beer and Tim realized he was mellow and happy with the company.

"So." Tony pushed himself up slightly from where he was slumped in one corner of the couch. "Are we friends again?"

Tim, similarly ensconced in the other corner, blinked and looked at Tony. "Huh? What do you mean?"

Tony took a swig of beer. "Well, earlier today you were -"

"Pissed with you?"

"Yeah."

Tim shook his head and smiled fondly at Tony. "Oh, Tony," he said. "Just because someone is pissed with you, it doesn't mean they stop being your friend."

"Doesn't it?"

Tim sat up, wondering just what kind of friendships Tony formed. "No. In fact," he paused and took a swallow of beer, "it's a sign of a solid friendship."

Tony blinked. "It is?"

Tim nodded. "Look at how Ducky was pissed with Gibbs when he came back from Mexico. And look at them now; their friendship's as close as ever."

Tony looked surprised. "You're saying we're like Gibbs and Ducky?"

Tim shrugged. "In a way, yes. They've been friends a lot longer than we have. But I regard you as my closest friend, Tony."

Tony's mouth fell open. "You do?"

Tim nodded. "Yes, I do. And I should have said it before, I'm sorry for what I said earlier."

Tony shook his head. "I deserved it."

"No, you didn't. You're not stupid, Tony."

"I'm not as intelligent as you or Ducky or Abby or Palmer or Ziva or Gibbs."

Tim couldn't argue with what Tony said. "But in some ways you're smarter than any of us."

Tony was silent for a moment. "How come you've never snapped back at me before? I mean you have a few times, but mostly you've always put up with what I've said or done."

Tim settled back again. "When I first met you I guess I was in awe of you."

"You were in awe of me?" Tony sounded astonished.

"In a way I was. There you were a seasoned field agent, Gibbs's right hand man; you'd been a cop, you knew what you were doing. Later on when I became a bit more confident, I saw you as more annoying than anything else. It was only when I started to see you as a friend that I felt I could hit back a bit."

Tony grinned, took a long swallow and slouched back again. "You're a strange man, Timothy McGee," he said. "You want to know something?"

"What?"

"The main reason I hazed you, teased you, belittled you was because I was afraid you'd take my place on the team."

Tim laughed. "No, Tony, that'd never happen."

Tony shrugged. "Maybe; maybe not." He looked at Tim for a moment then held up his bottle. "To friendship," he said.

Tim touched his bottle to Tony's. "To friendship."
