This is probably the easiest one of all. My favourite episode from the fourth series is:
What's not to love about this episode?
With my slash hat on it's pretty much a slash fest from beginning to end. The training, how Bodie helps Doyle up and half cuddles him; Doyle putting his head on Bodie's shoulder; just how they are there for one another. Then at the house the sleeping bag scene and the talk and all the looks and closeness. And sharing a razor and confessions of being scared.
Cowley is really good in the episode too, very much in charge and focussed and determined, brusque more often than not.
The plot isn't shabby either, it's very well done and the whole mirroring of the two pairs of partners being trained is very well done indeed. It's also clever how they met at the pub and then in the mass shoot out at the end Bodie sees the man who came to his rescue in the fight outside the pub and smiles, an automatic reaction before a split second later his brain takes over and he reacts.
And the final scene with Doyle squatting down by the lake after killing the bad guy he was chasing and looking at his gun. I personally read that as Bodie had indeed, against Doyle's wishes or even knowledge, doctored the bullets so they were dumdums. That is the way I have always read that scene - I know other people differ and I agree it is open to interpretation, but that's how I read it.
It's a fast moving episode with excellent scenes and acting and a very good storyline.
It's my favourite.
