Day 07 – Least favourite character

I thought long and hard about this one, trying to decide whether to go with my least favourite main character or with someone who was a recurring character. There are several recurring characters I dislike strongly, M Allison Hart, EJ Barrett, Abigail Borin & Hollis Mann to name but four. Interestingly, they are all female; sadly, it seems TPTB really seem incapable of writing a decent female character for the most part. And I dislike all four of these considerably more than the person I did decide to go with and I'd be an incredibly happy bunny if we never saw any of them again - which isn't true with the character I've gone with.

So why have I gone with this person and not one of the above-mentioned women? Two reasons: firstly it seemed 'fairer' to me to go with a main character and not someone I've only seen a handful of times. And secondly, it wasn't a question about 'a character I disliked' and I disliked all the above-mentioned women. No, it was a question about 'least favourite'. And that was the main thing that tipped the balance as to who to go with. So my least favourite main character is:

Anthony DiNozzo.

Don't get me wrong I really like Tony, at times I love him. When he's being smart, competent, caring, acting the clown - not the idiot, there's a big difference - compassionate, respectful to and of his colleagues and mature, he is great. I really loved him in Season 4, because he was all those things and so much more. But sadly, this is Tony we see maybe 95% of the time (if that), the rest of the time he isn't that Tony :-(

As much as I like him a lot of the time I want to slap him and shake him. I don't like him when he's being an idiot, or when his 'teasing' crosses the line of acceptability, as it did a lot of the time prior to this current season - especially with Tim. There were times he was actually nasty to his colleagues, showed them very little respect and some of the tricks he played were utterly irresponsible - especially then one when he fixed Ziva's chair so it broke when she sat on it. That wasn't even remotely funny, she could have been paralysed for life. I also, on the shallow side, don't find him attractive at all, and I his voice doesn't do anything for me - voice is a really important thing to me.

For the most part in Season 8 he has been very likeable as he's mainly been the mature, caring, competent, respectful clown who I don't want to shake or slap and who is a pleasure to watch.

So yes, Tony is my least favourite of the main characters. But it doesn't mean I dislike him, I don't; he's just not my favourite. And after all, someone has to be least favourite.

I think I agree with you here. If I meet him on the street, without knowing him or having been exposed to his "good side", I would characterize his as a douchebag, bully, misogynist and various other nasty adjectives.

But as you said, there's that compassionate side to him and I love it when that comes out. It shows that it is possible to be teasing, prankerish and appreciate of females without being the downright nasty and sleezy person he is at times.

Yes, exactly! And your additional adjectives are all ones I'd use too.

Indeed he is, I wish they'd show that side of him more.

I'm glad you agree with me.

lol i had a feeling you would pick Tony... just wondering if you like him less than Vance (don't think I am trying to change your opinion totally not) just curious.

As much as I love love LOVE Tony, and you know how much that is lol, I totally understand the points you have raised, I guess a lot of the times I can overlook those though since I do love him so much.

Good point about Ziva's chair, it was the first thing I thought of when that scene happened. Also not a fan of the snark he had with mcgee with the line 'you were funnier when you were fat' or whatever that was just uncalled for!

Still Tony will always be my fave! ;D

It took me some time to choose as I was initially going to go with Hart. But then as I said I dislike her, there's a difference. Would I rate Tony lower than Vance? I'm afraid I would over all.

You love Tony? Wow, now that is a surprise *g* I'm glad you can understand the points I raise - that's good to know. And I can understand given how much you love him how you can overlook them - that's natural.

And I'm jolly glad you agree re: Ziva's chair. It was a stupid, stupid thing to do and actually, to be fair, very, very out of character. He does do daft things, but he doesn't do dangerous ones and he'd know what that could have done. *Nods* Yes, that's the unpleasant kind of comment that causes me to snarl. And there's no need for it, we know he can do fun snark.

*Grins*

wow I find that interesting. though then again I prefer Vance over Ziva so I guess it isn't that hard to understand! :D

LMFAO! oddly enough I do love Tony! who'd have thunked it! ;D I am sure with your love for ducky you can overlook his flaws as well!

as someone said to me on twitter the other day (ok it is about a different topic but it still fits) the majority of those ooc happenings are the result of the different writers views.

Though you have to admit Ziva and McGee have been known to be really cruel towards Tony as well. There a line Ziva said to Tony in Obsession (I think) that was really out of line, and there have been times in the last couple of seasons where she takes things too far. Also Ziva and McGee turning off the radio in in Dead Air was beyond cruel, I think if that had happend in a RL scenario they would have been fired, or at least suspended.

lol oops there I go defending Tony again! ;D

There you go then *g*

I will always make of point of saying when I don't like something a character has done, no matter if they are my favourite or not. I don't over-look them as such, because they are part of what makes the character 'them'. After all, no one is perfect - and who'd want a perfect person anyway? Flaws are good.

There have been times when both Tim and Ziva have said things to Tony that cross the line of sibling banter. With Tim I can get it, after all he's suffered years of Tony's comments and putting him down and making fun of him - a lot has been in fun, but a lot have crossed he line. So it's only right that finally he snaps and makes one of two comments that for Tim are very much out of character. The worm always turns. Ziva too has crossed the line a few times, but no where near as much as Tony, I'm sad to say.

Er, did you really believe they turned the radio off? I didn't not for a second - they wouldn't do that they are far too professional. That was just teasing, that's very much Tim's brand of humour. Remember in S1 when he and Tony were teamed together and Gibbs and Kate were on a stake-out and Tony wanted to do something to annoy Kate? Remember Tim's brilliant idea of do nothing, because it'll drive her mad trying to find out what Tony had done - and also reminding Tony what he did to Kate he'd be doing to Gibbs. The radio thing was along those lines. Of course they didn't turn it off, that was pure sibling teasing. It was clear in their tone, their body language, everything that they hadn't turned the radio off.

As for being suspended or fired. I hate to think how many times that would have happened to Tony in RL - not to mention being disciplined for sexist behaviour and remarks *g*

I understand and agree with your points perfectly.

I have a love/want to kill relationship with Tony - my feeling for him are "divided" because he is a "divided" character (for lack of a better word right at this moment).

When he is being "Good Tony" I love him, I could draw little hearts around his name and squee like the fangirl that I am.

When he is being "Bad Tony" I want to kill him - perhaps with own gun or with Ziva's depending on what he has done to tick me off.

My whole "problem" with Tony is I never know from one week to the next which Tony I am getting - keeps me on an emtional roller coaster.

Thank you - I'm glad you understand and agree with the points I raise.

When he's 'good' he really is a lovely character.

But yes, when he's 'bad' Tony, killing does seem like a good idea at times - certainly slapping and shaking very, very hard.

And sometimes he's a different Tony within in an episode!

I'm following three of you doing this in synch and you are the only one who went with both a regular and a male.
nakeisha From: nakeisha Date: 8th June 2011 10:21 (UTC) (Link)
Interesting.

I've seen several who started doing it at the same time and yes, they are all women and with the exception of someone naming Jenny have been Hart and EJ.

It's a pity the show can't do better by some of it's female characters, but given the kind of show it is and the kind of writer Bellisario is, I can also say we should be grateful for the awesome female characters we've gotten.
nakeisha From: nakeisha Date: 9th June 2011 09:06 (UTC) (Link)
It's a great pity they can't.

They do from time to time, we do get an excellent woman, but they are few and far between. I guess we should indeed be grateful.

Well said, well said. I completely agree with you. Unfortunately there are so many times when DiNozzo seems out of character - the irresponsible, immature clown - that it got me thinking if the responsible, caring and funny DiNozzo isn't really who is out of character in a way.
It's such a shame - it can't be that difficult to write funny lines without making an arse out of his character.

Also yes, to the poor female character writing.
nakeisha From: nakeisha Date: 8th June 2011 10:22 (UTC) (Link)
Thank you. And it's good to know you agree with what I say.

I know *sighs* Actually, that is a jolly good point you raise about the caring, responsible DiNozzo actually being the OOC one :-(

Indeed :-(
