Because knowledgeable flist knows all - technical help needed

I mentioned a few days ago that I was converting fanfic for my Kindle, but had to get it 'just so'. The very helpful solo suggested I set up a macro to make the tedious and repetitive tasks much faster and simpler, which was a great idea and one I hadn't thought of, it's been donkey's years since I used macros.

So I worked out the steps I wanted (all eight of them) tested them step by step to make sure they worked and then set about recording the macro. To cut a long story short I spent most of yesterday and again today fiddling with it, looking on the web for help, etc. because whilst I could happily and quickly record the first few steps when it got to one in particular it just in effect stopped and didn't record, or if it did, it didn't work.

What I am trying to do is to find bold text and replace it with the code that in effect puts the html code for bold, so I can in a later step I can use this code in combination with paragraph/tab to finish off tidying up the stories. However, this is where I come unstuck. It works in the actual document, but just won't work in the macro.

I tried doing a very simple macro just changing bold text to italics, but no, it won't even do that. I tried it by simple typing Ctrl B in the 'Find' box and Ctrl I in the 'Replace'. I tried it by selecting 'Bold' and then 'Italic' from the drop down 'Format' box at the bottom of the Find & Replace box. I played around with wild cards, but can't get them to do what I want. I even went into the VB did a bit of copy & pasting and told it to find Font.Bold and replace with Font.Italic (not that I wanted that for the macro, but it was a case of seeing if it worked). However, no matter what I did it didn't work; at least it didn't when I run the macro. It works perfectly just in the document if I do it by hand.

The macro works if I put some text in the 'Find' box and lets me use the desired code or use italics or anything. And it will allow me to include searches for paragraphs and/or tabs. But what it won't allow me to do is just put bold as the find feature without any text. And that is pointless, because clearly the text won't be the same every time.

Now solo has recorded a simple macro replacing Bold with a Heading, but she is using Word 2007 2000, whereas I'm using Word 2003.

So my questions, dear flist techies, are:

a) Is what I am trying to do possible? Is there any way I can just search for 'Bold' without putting in a word or letter?
b) If so, how do I do it? What am I doing wrong?

This is the macro I want to write (I'm not that bothered by the order of things, this just make sense to me).

Obviously [ ] are < > but if I use them here LJ 'kindly' changes it to the actual code.

1. Change Paragraph ~~~~~~~ Paragraph to zzzzzzz

2. Change Paragraph Paragraph to Paragraph Tab

3. Change zzzzz to Paragraph Paragraph

4. Change to fully justified

5. Change Bold to ^&

6. Change Paragraph Tab to Paragraph Paragraph

7. Change Paragraph to Paragraph Paragraph

8. Change to 'Leave replace field blank'

Stages 1 - 4 are fine and that is the macro I currently have. It does a lot of the reformatting, but to sort out anything that is bold, i.e. a 'sub-heading' for want of a better term, for example the date or location, I have to search for bold and then hand edit putting the double space back in and de-tabbing it. It's not a huge amount of extra work, it's not something all stories have, but if there is a way to do it all in a macro it would save time, naturally.

The irony is that the amount of time I spent on it yesterday and on Sunday could have equated to either writing several thousand words or re-formatting dozens of stories *wry grin*

Can anyone help, please? I hope I've explained the problem well enough.
